Amsterdam, Netherlands
Europe's original gay capital. Amsterdam has been a beacon of LGBTQ+ freedom since the 1970s — the world's first legal same-sex marriages happened here in 2001. The Reguliersdwarsstraat and Warmoesstraat strips pack more gay bars per block than almost anywhere on earth. Canal-side pride, leather culture, and a tolerant spirit that's been baked into the city for centuries.
Reguliersdwarsstraat & Warmoesstraat 🏳️
Amsterdam has been a gay haven since the 1970s. The Netherlands legalized same-sex marriage in 2001 — the first country on earth to do so. The city's LGBTQ+ scene clusters on two streets: Reguliersdwarsstraat (the main gay strip, just off Rembrandtplein) and Warmoesstraat in the Red Light District (leather, fetish, kink). Pride week in July is one of Europe's most spectacular — the Canal Pride boat parade on the Prinsengracht is unmissable.
Gay Neighborhoods
- 🍺 Reguliersdwarsstraat — the main gay bar strip, central and lively
- ⛏ Warmoesstraat — leather, fetish, and kink bars near Centraal
- 🏠 Keizersgracht / Jordaan — gay guesthouses and quiet canal life
- 🏄 Rembrandtplein — nightclub square where the action spills after midnight
Pride & Events
- ⛳ Canal Pride (August) — 80 decorated boats parade the Prinsengracht
- 🎏 Leather Pride Amsterdam — one of Europe's biggest leather weekends
- 🌟 King's Day (April 27) — city-wide street party, very LGBTQ+-friendly
- 🌈 Gay Swim — the street outside Club Church becomes a foam party
