About the neighbourhood

Montrose has been Houston's queer cultural corridor since the 1980s — a walkable stretch between the Museum District, the Heights, and the Third Ward where the city's LGBTQ+ community has concentrated for four decades. The corridor runs along Westheimer from Montrose Boulevard east to Mandell, with parallel streets north and south connecting the gayborhood to Brazos Bookstore (open since 1974, one of the oldest independent bookshops in Texas), the Montrose coffee row that is Houston's most-cited queer community anchor, and Turkey Leg Hut's Third-Ward southern edge. Montrose is the smallest of Houston's cultural corridors but the only one with an everyday walkable queer character year-round. The neighbourhood's identity is shaped by its proximity to both the Museum District's cultural institutions and the Third Ward's Black queer history — a crossover that gives Montrose a more racially and economically diverse queer character than most American gayborhoods.
